What is Monkeypox virus infection?

Monkeypox is a dangerous disease which is caused by the virus commonly known as monkeypox virus. However; it is not quite fatal, yet we need to be careful since it can transmit.

It is a viral zoonotic disease, this means that this virus can spread from animals to humans.  It can also spread from one person to another one. This is why monkeypox in humans is possible.

What are the symptoms of Monkeypox virus infection?

Usually, people with monkeypox have a fever, a severe headache, sore muscles, back pain, low energy, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash or sores on their skin. Most of the time, the rash appears one to three days after the fever starts.

Lesions can be flat or slightly raised and filled with clear or yellowish fluid. They can then crust over, dry out, and fall off.  One person can have anywhere from a few to several thousand lesions. Most of the rash is on the face, palms of the hands, and bottoms of the feet. 

You can also find them in the mouth, on the genitalia, and in the eyes; symptoms usually may last between 2 and 4 weeks and go away on their own without treatment. If you think you might have monkeypox and have signs of it, talk to your doctor as soon as possible.

Most of the time, the symptoms of monkeypox go away on their own without having to be treated. It is important to take care of the rash by letting it dry if you can or protecting the area with a moist dressing if you must. 

Don’t touch any sores in your eyes or mouth. You can use mouth rinses and eye drops as long as you don’t use anything with cortisone in it. In severe cases, Vaccinia Immune Globulin (VIG) may be suggested.

 In January 2022, tecovirimat, which is sold under the brand name TPOXX, an antiviral that was made to treat smallpox, was also approved to treat monkeypox.

There is no cure currently:

WHO does not recommend a specific treatment for monkeypox at this time, but there are licensed antivirals that can fight orthopoxviruses, such as tecovirimat.

The smallpox vaccine was a key part of getting rid of smallpox decades ago, and this same vaccine can prevent monkeypox in 85% of cases. 

But the original smallpox vaccines from the first generation are no longer available to the general public. In 2019, a newer vaccine based on vaccinia was approved to prevent smallpox and monkeypox, but it is not widely available yet either.

Is monkeypox a deadly virus?

This might be very good news to you that Between 1 and 11 percent of people who get monkeypox die from it. If you’ve had smallpox before, you might be protected from monkeypox.

But it does not mean that you stop taking precautions, and get exposed to this virus. Still suffering from this virus is painful and we do not want you to suffer. Always take care of yourself. Monkeypox in the US is also rising, so people need to be very careful there too.

Monkeypox outbreak that was found in multiple countries in May 2022

In May 2022, there were cases of human monkeypox in a number of countries where it is not common. As of May 19, 2022, cases are being reported from more than 10 countries outside of areas where the disease is common.

Cases in non-endemic areas that are not linked to travel from endemic countries are not common, with the exception of cases that are occasionally reported in travelers from endemic countries.

 As of May 2022, there is no clear link between the reported cases and travel from countries where the disease is common, and there is also no link with infected animals.
